⚡ Quick answers
Best kitchen lighting overall: a mix of ambient, task and accent light, each on its own switch where you can.
The island is where a kitchen does most of its living: homework, morning coffee, chopping, and the late-night chat that never leaves the stools. It is also the one spot where a pendant light does two jobs at once, lighting the worktop and setting the style for the whole room.
This guide covers what UK homeowners ask about most: how high to hang a pendant, how many you need, which bulb to use and which style suits your kitchen. You will also find popular fittings from the full kitchen lighting collection, with real specs and prices.

What type of lighting is best for a kitchen?
The best kitchen lighting is layered. One central ceiling light rarely does the job, because you end up working in your own shadow. Plan three layers and put each on a separate switch or dimmer if you can.
2 · Task
Bright, focused light where you prep and cook.
Island pendants, under-cabinet lights
Island pendants sit in the middle: task lighting by day, mood lighting by night, which is why they repay a bit of planning.
How high should you hang pendant lights over a kitchen island?
Lower than that and the shades start blocking sightlines across the room. Higher and you lose the pool of light on the worktop.
🧮 Worked example
Ceiling 2.4m, island worktop 90cm: the gap is 1.5m. Want the shade bottom 80cm above the worktop? Then it hangs about 70cm below the ceiling.
Most pendants below have a 95cm adjustable cable, so you can shorten the drop to hit your number. Tall households and low ceilings both argue for the higher end of the range, so hold a tape measure up before you drill.
How many pendants do you need?
Two suit a compact island and three suit a longer one. Keep at least about 60cm between fittings and centre the group on the island so it looks deliberate. For a single statement piece, a multi-light cluster pendant does the work of several from one ceiling point.

Which pendant style works best in a kitchen?
Our kitchen collection splits into three main pendant families, each with its own personality.
🔔
Shade pendants
The all-rounder. A metal dome or bowl throws light onto the worktop and keeps the bulb out of your eyeline. Comes in a wide spread of colours.
🧺
Cage pendants
Light and airy. A wire or metal cage spreads light in every direction, so it feels softer. Great for smaller kitchens.
🔧
Pipe & industrial
The loft look. Suits exposed brick, dark cabinets and warehouse-style kitchens. Multi-head pipe pendants make a strong centrepiece.
Our kitchen pendant picks
Prices and options were checked on the product pages in November 2026. Colours and bulb options can sell out, so check the live page before ordering.
What bulb do you need for a kitchen pendant?
The pendants above all use an E27 holder, the large Edison screw, and take bulbs up to 60W. An LED bulb is the sensible choice: it runs cooler, uses less energy and lasts far longer than an old filament lamp. Browse E27 bulbs or the wider LED bulb range.
💡 Pro tip: check the bulb option
Several LEDSone pendants have a "bulb required" choice on the product page, so you can add one or leave it out if you already have bulbs.
Can you dim a kitchen pendant?
Yes. These pendants dim when paired with a dimmable bulb and a matching dimmer switch. You need both: a dimmable bulb on a standard switch will not dim. Start with our dimmable LED bulbs.
What colour temperature is best for a kitchen?
Warm white, around 2700K–3000K, is a popular choice for kitchens, particularly kitchen-diners. It is bright enough to work by and warm enough to feel comfortable in the evening. If your island is mostly a prep surface, a slightly brighter 3000K–4000K bulb can feel crisper, and you can swap bulbs without changing the fitting.
Choosing a finish and colour
A black or white shade is the safe route and works with almost any cabinet colour. A single bold shade, such as yellow or green, over an otherwise neutral island is one of the easiest ways to add personality. Metallic finishes warm up a scheme: our kitchen range includes brushed brass, brushed copper, brushed silver, chrome, gold and rose gold options.
🎯 Designer's rule
Repeat one finish elsewhere in the room, such as the tap, cabinet handles or a wall light, so the pendant looks chosen rather than added.
Do not forget the other layers
Pendants should not carry the whole kitchen. Add wall lights for soft accent light, or plug-in lights where moving a ceiling point is not practical. For a vintage look, pipe lights pair well with island pendants.
Installation tips
Check ceiling height, island height and island length before choosing a style or number of fittings.
Centre the pendants on the island, not on the room.
Avoid hanging fittings directly over a cooking area where steam and grease will reach them.
See ceiling roses and hanging chains and cord grips if you are customising a drop.
⚠️ Safety first
Switch off at the consumer unit before you touch any wiring, and use a qualified electrician if you are not confident. Our product installation guide has more detail.

Kitchen pendant light FAQs
What type of lighting is best for a kitchen?
Layered lighting works best: ambient light for the whole room, task light over worktops and islands, and accent light for mood. Put each layer on its own switch or dimmer if you can.
How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?
Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit roughly 75–90cm above the worktop. Adjust up for tall users or low ceilings, and shorten the cable to suit.
How many pendant lights should I hang over an island?
Two suit a smaller island and three suit a longer one. Leave at least about 60cm between fittings and centre them along the island. A multi-head cluster pendant is a one-fitting alternative.
What bulb do kitchen pendant lights use?
The pendants in this guide use E27 bulbs up to 60W. An LED E27 bulb is the efficient choice, and many LEDSone pendants let you add a bulb or leave it out.
Can I dim my pendant light?
Yes, if you use a dimmable bulb together with a matching dimmer switch. A dimmable bulb alone will not dim on a standard switch.
What colour temperature is best for a kitchen?
Warm white around 2700K–3000K suits most kitchens and kitchen-diners. If you want crisper light for food prep, you can go a little cooler, up to around 4000K.
Can I fit a pendant light myself?
These pendants are hardwired fittings. If you are comfortable with basic wiring, turn the power off at the consumer unit first and follow the installation guide. If you are not sure, hire a qualified electrician.
