Chain Finishes

The finish affects both the look and the durability. Choose one that complements your décor and holds up over time:

• Galvanised – Industrial and practical

For added protection, especially in humid areas, go for powder-coated or galvanised chains. These resist rust and wear better over time.

Weight Capacity & Safety

For Light Fittings

Always follow the weight specified by the manufacturer. Standard ceiling electrical boxes can usually hold up to 50 lbs (approx. 22.7 kg). If your light fitting is heavier, you’ll need a heavy-duty electrical box or a special support brace fixed directly to a ceiling joist. Chains are available to support a wide range of weights, including loads over 100 lbs.

For Indoor Plants

Consider the total weight—including the pot, soil, and plant. Wet soil can weigh up to twice as much as dry soil, so always factor in watering. Plant chains typically support between 20 and 50 lbs. Choose a chain that safely exceeds the plant’s maximum wet weight.

Understanding Gauge and Grade

Gauge refers to the thickness of the chain—the lower the number, the thicker and stronger the chain.

Grade relates to the strength of the metal itself. Higher grades mean stronger chains. For most home uses, standard lighting and plant chains with a specified weight limit and gauge are perfectly suitable.

The chain is an extension of your light or plant and should complement your room’s overall style.

Style Compatibility:

• Industrial: Raw steel, satin black, faux rust finishes.
• Rustic/Farmhouse: Aged brass, oil-rubbed bronze, galvanised metal.

Proportion and Length

Chain length matters, especially for lights. Pendant lights typically hang 30–36 inches above dining tables. For plants, adjustable chains are ideal so you can position them perfectly as they grow.

Light Installation

Always switch off the power at the breaker before starting. Secure the fixture firmly to the electrical junction box, making sure it can support the weight. If your fixture weighs over 50 lbs, get a professional to install it with heavy-duty support.

Plant Hanging

For heavy plants, hang the chain from a ceiling joist. For lighter plants or drywall, use strong hardware like toggle bolts or wall anchors. For very light plants, no-drill options like adhesive hooks or tension rods can work.

Rust Resistance

In humid or outdoor environments, choose materials like Stainless Steel 316 (Marine Grade), hot-dipped galvanised steel, or powder-coated steel for better corrosion protection. Aluminium also won’t rust.

Maintenance

Clean chains regularly to remove dirt and moisture, then dry them thoroughly. Check chains regularly for early signs of rust or wear.
