Flush Ceiling Lights: The UK Buyer's Guide to Choosing the Right Size, Style and Bulb

What is a flush ceiling light?

A flush ceiling light, also called a flush mount light, is a fitting fixed straight onto the ceiling with no stem, chain or cable drop. Because nothing hangs down, it is the safest and tidiest choice for low ceilings, narrow hallways, stairwells and small rooms.

You may also see "ceiling flush lights", "close-to-ceiling lights" or "flat ceiling lights". They all mean essentially the same thing.

Which size flush ceiling light do I need? (Room-size table)

For a quick estimate, use this rule: (room length in m + room width in m) × 8 = fitting diameter in cm.

A 3 m × 4 m bedroom gives (3 + 4) × 8 = 56 cm. That suits a large single fitting or a group of smaller ones spread across the room. In narrow spaces such as hallways, choose the smaller end of the range and add a second fitting.

Lumens vary by bulb, not by fitting. A standard 806-lumen LED bulb replaces an old 60W incandescent. A single E27 fitting therefore often needs a brighter bulb, or you need more than one fitting in bigger rooms. Which flush ceiling light works best in each room?

Hallways and landings. Choose a compact, low-profile fitting so nobody brushes against it. Warm white light feels welcoming, and an E27 LED bulb keeps running costs low because the light is often on for short bursts.

Bedrooms. Pick a softer, warm white bulb (2700K) and consider a dimmable bulb, so you can lower the light in the evening. A single medium fitting is usually enough, and bedside lamps can add a second layer.

Kitchens and dining areas. You need more light here, so use two or three fittings or a multi-light design, with neutral white bulbs (3500K–4000K). Dome and cage shades are easy to wipe clean, but keep them away from direct cooking heat and steam.

Living rooms. Combine one or two ceiling fittings with table and floor lamps, so you can change the mood. Semi-flush designs with an open cage or crystal detail give the ceiling more presence than a plain dome.

How to choose the right flush ceiling light

1. Check your ceiling height

If your ceiling is below 2.4 m, or you have a low landing or stairwell, choose a true flush fitting. On standard 2.4 m ceilings and above, a semi-flush fitting adds more character without getting in the way. If you want something that hangs lower, look at our pendant lights or chandeliers.

2. Match the style to the room

• Modern: black, chrome or satin nickel finishes with simple shades. See our modern lighting.
• Vintage and industrial: metal domes, cages and hammered finishes. See our vintage lighting.
• Decorative: crystal and multi-light designs for bedrooms and living rooms.

3. Get the bulb right

Most of our flush fittings take an E27 bulb, so the bulb sets the light, not the fitting.

• Warm white (2700K–3000K) suits living rooms and bedrooms.
• Neutral white (3500K–4000K) suits kitchens, home offices and utility rooms.
• Cool white (4000K–5000K) suits workspaces and garages. It is less comfortable in relaxing rooms.

4. Plan the spacing

For even light, space multiple fittings roughly 1.2–1.8 m apart. In a hallway, fit one light every 2–3 m so there are no dark patches.

Do I need an electrician to fit a flush ceiling light?

If you are swapping like-for-like on an existing lighting circuit and you are confident working safely with electrics, many people fit these themselves. In England, this kind of replacement is generally not notifiable under Building Regulations. New circuits, changes in bathrooms and other special locations are different, and they should be done by a registered electrician.

Basic steps

1. Turn off the circuit at the consumer unit and confirm the power is off with a voltage tester.
2. Remove the old fitting and note how the wires are connected.
3. Fix the mounting plate or bracket to the ceiling, using a joist or a suitable fixing.
