What's the difference between a toggle switch and a rocker switch?

Toggle switches use a lever that flips up or down with an audible click, while rocker switches use a flat paddle that is pressed on either side and typically operate more quietly. Toggle switches are popular for period, industrial, and vintage interiors, while rocker switches offer a more modern appearance.

What amp rating do I need for a light switch?

For standard domestic lighting circuits, a 10A–16A rated switch is usually suitable. Always check your circuit's actual current requirements and choose a switch rated equal to or higher than the circuit protection rating. If unsure, consult a qualified electrician.

Can I replace a toggle switch with a rocker switch?

Yes, but you will usually need to replace the mounting yoke and faceplate as toggle and rocker switches often use different housing designs and cutout sizes.

Do I need an electrician to fit a new light switch?

Replacing an existing switch with a like-for-like replacement is a task many competent DIYers can complete safely. However, any new circuit installation or wiring extension must be carried out by a qualified Part P electrician under UK Building Regulations.

What is a conduit switch box used for?

A conduit switch box is a surface-mounted galvanised steel box designed to house toggle or rocker switches as part of a 20mm conduit lighting system. It allows the switch to match an industrial exposed pipe and conduit style instead of using a standard plastic wall box.

What's a pull switch and where is it typically used?

A pull switch, also known as a cord switch, is operated by pulling a cord rather than using a lever or rocker. It is commonly used in bathrooms and other areas where regulations may restrict standard wall switches near water sources.

What does a ceiling rose with a toggle switch do?

A ceiling rose with a toggle switch combines the ceiling rose and switching mechanism into one fitting. It allows a pendant light to be controlled directly at the ceiling rose without requiring a separate wall switch.

How do I wire a toggle or rocker switch safely?

Always switch off power at the consumer unit and confirm the circuit is not live before handling wiring. If you are unsure about identifying live, neutral, and earth connections, use a qualified electrician to complete the installation safely.
