As a rule of thumb, allow one pendant for every 75–90cm of island length, spaced evenly so the light spreads without leaving dark patches at either end. A 1.8m island typically suits two to three pendants; anything longer usually looks better as a cluster or linear bar fitting.

Most of our pendants come with an adjustable cable or chain, so you can set the drop to suit your ceiling height without cutting anything. If a listing doesn't mention adjustable length, the product page will state the fixed drop measurement — check this against the table above before ordering.

Many of our fittings are dimmer-compatible when paired with a dimmable LED bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. Look for "dimmable" in the product title or spec table; if it isn't listed, treat the fitting as non-dimmable to avoid flickering.

Swapping a like-for-like pendant on an existing ceiling rose is a job many confident DIYers manage safely, but any new wiring, ceiling rose relocation, or work near a consumer unit should go to a qualified electrician. When in doubt, get a professional to check the installation.

The vast majority of our pendant range uses an E27 (screw) fitting, which is noted on each product page along with maximum wattage. Always check the individual listing, as a small number of styles use different fittings.

Only fittings with an appropriate IP rating are safe for bathrooms or covered outdoor spaces. Check the IP rating on the product page — standard indoor pendants without an IP rating should stay in dry, living areas only.

It depends on the pendant. Fittings with a shade ring (a threaded collar around the bulb holder) can take a lampshade, while sealed or built-in-shade designs cannot. Check the product description for “shade ring” or “easy fit”, or browse our Easy Fit lamp shades. If you already own a shade, measure its fitting opening and compare it with the ring size in the specification.

Bulb inclusion varies by product, so check the title and description: a bulb is only included where it says so. Most of our pendants use an E27 (Edison screw) fitting, and the maximum wattage is given in the specification. If a maximum wattage is not listed, ask us before fitting a high-wattage bulb. The cable type and number of cores differ between models, and both are stated in the product description. Fittings with exposed metal parts should be earthed, so check whether yours is supplied with 3-core cable (with earth) or 2-core cable for a double-insulated (Class II) fitting. If you are unsure, ask us or a qualified electrician before installing.
