Lighting Sets UK: What They Are, How to Choose One and the Best Options for Kitchens and Living Rooms
A lighting set is a ready-to-hang pendant kit: shade or cage, fabric cable, lamp holder and ceiling rose supplied together, so you only add a bulb. Choose by room size, ceiling height, bulb base (E27 in most sets) and whether you need one, three or more outlets.
Key takeaways
- Most sets in our lighting set collection use an E27 (Edison screw) lamp holder, and the bulb is sold separately.
- An E27 bulb is dimmable only if the bulb says so and your dimmer is LED-compatible.
- Hang kitchen and dining pendants about 75–90 cm above the surface below them.
- Single-shade sets suit rooms of roughly 10–15 m² per fitting; use 3-way or 8-way sets for larger spaces.
- Prices in the collection currently start from £10.15, with free UK delivery over £30.
What is a lighting set?
A lighting set is a complete ceiling pendant kit sold as one product. It normally includes the shade or wire cage, a length of fabric-covered cable, an E27 lamp holder and a ceiling rose, so you can hang it without sourcing each part separately.
The name is used in the UK for two things that are easy to confuse: a pendant light set (what this guide covers) and a multi-piece decorative set with several shades on one rose. In our collection, both live together, and you can filter by model:
- Shade pendants (15 products): metal domes, cones and horn shapes that direct light downwards.
- Cage pendants (4 products): open wire frames that throw a softer, patterned glow.
- 3-way sets and one 8-way spider set: several lamps from a single ceiling point.
Because the cable, holder and rose are matched, a set is the simplest route from an empty ceiling point to a finished pendant. If you want more control, our DIY lighting range lets you build one part by part.
How do I choose a lighting set?
Start with the room and ceiling height, then match the bulb base, shade style and number of outlets. Check what is included, because most sets exclude the bulb. Decide on dimming before you buy, since it affects which bulb you need.
| Decide | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Room size | A single pendant is listed for roughly 10–15 m² of lighting area. For bigger rooms, use a 3-way set or fit two or more pendants. |
| Ceiling height | Keep the lowest edge of the shade at least 2.1 m from the floor in walkways. Fabric cable can be shortened to suit. |
| Shade or cage | Shades focus light down onto a table or worktop. Cages spread light more widely and suit hallways and casual spaces. |
| Bulb base | Most sets take E27 (screw). Older UK fittings often use B22 (bayonet), so do not assume the two are interchangeable. |
| Outlets | 1-way for one lamp, 3-way for a cluster or a rectangular rose, 8-way for a statement spider fitting. |
| Finish | Match metal tones to taps, handles and other fixtures. The collection includes black, brass, copper, rose gold, blue and rustic red. |
| Dimming | Choose a bulb labelled dimmable, and pair it with an LED-compatible dimmer. |
If you are unsure how the parts fit together, use our product configurator or read the installation guide before ordering.
What is the best lighting set for a living room?
For a living room, choose a warm, decorative set with a finish that suits your furniture, and use one pendant per 10–15 m² or a 3-way set for larger rooms. Pair it with a dimmable warm-white bulb so you can change the mood.
Living rooms are lit for many jobs: reading, watching TV, talking. A pendant works best as the central layer, so aim for a softer, warmer output and add lamps around the room. A metallic finish such as rose gold or brass adds a decorative touch without needing a large shade.
Our pick from the collection for a single-pendant living room is below. For a larger or open-plan space, the multi-way sets underneath spread light from one ceiling point.

What is the best lighting set for a kitchen?
For a kitchen, choose a downward-facing metal shade, hung about 75–90 cm above the worktop or island, with a bright warm-white bulb. Black and brass finishes are easy to wipe and suit most kitchens. Use two pendants over a small island and three over a longer one.
Kitchens need task lighting, so closed metal shades work better than open cages, because they push light onto the surface you are working on. Space pendants roughly 60–75 cm apart, centred over the island or table, as a starting point. Adjust from there to suit your layout.

What is the best lighting set in the UK?
There is no single best lighting set, because the right one depends on your room, budget and style. Judge any UK set on what is included, the bulb base, cable length, finish and delivery terms, then match it to the room it will hang in.
Use this shortlist as a starting point, based on products currently in the collection:

Where can I find a cheap lighting set in the UK?
Affordable UK lighting sets start from about £10 to £20 for a single pendant. To avoid a false saving, check that the price includes the lamp holder and ceiling rose, budget separately for the bulb, and look for free delivery thresholds and multi-buy offers.
In the LEDSone lighting set collection, single-pendant sets currently run from £10.15 upwards, with 3-way sets from £34.29. A few tips for spending less without cutting corners:
- Add the bulb to your budget. Sets are sold without one. Decorative LED bulbs are inexpensive; see our E27 bulbs and energy-saving LED bulbs.
- Buy for the whole room at once. Multi-buy offers are shown on product pages, so two pendants over an island can cost less per lamp.
- Reach the free delivery threshold. Delivery is free on UK orders over £30.
- Check the cable. A longer fabric cable can be shortened; a short one cannot be lengthened. See our 3-core round cables if you need extra length.
Lighting set vs alternatives: which is better?
A lighting set is best when you want a finished pendant with minimal decisions. Buying parts separately gives more control, easy-fit shades are quickest for an existing pendant, and flush lights suit low ceilings.
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting set | New pendant, matched parts, simple install | Fixed cable and holder finish |
| Separate parts (DIY) | Custom cable length, colour and holder | More choices; you check compatibility |
| Easy-fit shade | Refreshing an existing pendant quickly | Needs an existing fitting |
| Flush ceiling light | Low ceilings, hallways | Less of a statement |
| Chandelier or spider light | Large rooms, focal point | Higher price, needs a strong ceiling fixing |
If you already have a ceiling rose and cable and just want a new look, buy a shade only. For anything else, a set usually saves time. Browse all pendant lights to compare.
What is an E27 bulb?
An E27 bulb has an Edison screw base: the “E” stands for Edison and “27” is the thread diameter in millimetres. It is the standard base on most pendant lighting sets, and it is different from the B22 bayonet fitting common in older UK ceiling lights.
Because the base only describes how the bulb fits, an E27 bulb can be LED, halogen or incandescent, and in many shapes and sizes. Filament styles such as ST64 and G95 show off open cages nicely. Browse E27 base bulbs, or if your fitting is bayonet, see B22 base bulbs.
Are E27 bulbs dimmable?
Some are, but the E27 base does not decide it. A bulb dims only if it is labelled dimmable, and it must be used on a dimmer switch that is compatible with LED lamps. A non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer can flicker, buzz or fail early.
Here is a quick checklist:
- Read the bulb listing or packaging for the word “dimmable”. Many decorative filament bulbs come in both dimmable and non-dimmable versions.
- Confirm your wall dimmer is designed for LED loads, and check its minimum wattage. Older dimmers built for halogen bulbs can struggle with low-wattage LEDs.
- Do not mix dimmable and non-dimmable bulbs on the same circuit if you can avoid it.
- If you see flicker at low levels, try a different LED-rated dimmer or a bulb from a different range.
Shop dimmable LED bulbs for lamps you plan to dim, or non-dimmable LED bulbs where a plain on/off switch is fitted.
Why is my lighting set not working?
The most common causes are a blown or loosely seated bulb, the wrong bulb base, a tripped breaker, a loose connection at the lamp holder or ceiling rose, or an incompatible dimmer. Switch the power off at the consumer unit before you touch any wiring.
Safety first. Turn off the circuit at the consumer unit, not just the wall switch, before removing a shade or checking connections. If you are not confident, or the problem is at the wall or consumer unit, use a registered electrician. New circuits and work in bathrooms have extra rules under UK Building Regulations.
- Check the bulb. Swap in a bulb you know works. Make sure it is an E27 screw bulb, fully seated, and not a B22 bayonet.
- Check the power. Test another light on the same circuit. If several are out, look at the breaker or RCD in your consumer unit.
- Check the switch and dimmer. A worn switch or an LED-incompatible dimmer can cause flicker or no light at all.
- Check the lamp holder connections. With power off, make sure the live, neutral and, where fitted, earth wires are firmly clamped and not trapped by the shade.
- Check the ceiling rose. Loose terminals or a badly stripped wire can break the connection. Re-make it following the installation guide.
- Check the cable. If you shortened the fabric cable, confirm that the conductors are not nicked or touching.
If the fitting still does not work, contact us through the customer FAQ page, with photos of the lamp holder and rose, and we will help you diagnose it.
Lighting set FAQs
How high should a pendant lighting set hang?
Over a kitchen island or dining table, hang the bottom of the shade about 75–90 cm above the surface. In a living room or hallway, keep the lowest point at least 2.1 m above the floor so nobody walks into it.
How many pendants do I need over a kitchen island?
As a rule of thumb, use two pendants over an island up to about 1.5 m long and three over a longer one, spaced about 60–75 cm apart and centred on the island. A 3-way set can do the same job from one ceiling point.
Do lighting sets come with a bulb?
Usually not. Sets in our collection are supplied with the shade or cage, cable, lamp holder and ceiling rose, and the bulb is bought separately. Check the “package included” section on each product page.
Can I fit a lighting set myself?
Replacing an existing ceiling pendant like-for-like is a job many competent DIYers do, provided the power is off at the consumer unit. If you need new wiring, a new circuit or work in a bathroom, hire a registered electrician and check current Building Regulations.
What bulb should I use in a lighting set?
Use an E27 screw-base bulb. For most living spaces choose a warm-white LED, such as 2700K, and check the maximum wattage on the product page. Choose a dimmable bulb only if you will use a compatible dimmer.
What is the difference between a cage pendant and a shade pendant?
A shade pendant directs light downwards, which suits worktops and tables. A cage pendant lets light spread in all directions through the frame, giving a softer, decorative glow for hallways, bedrooms and seating areas.
Will a lighting set fit a low ceiling?
Yes, if you shorten the fabric cable, but keep the lowest edge of the shade at least 2.1 m above the floor in walkways. For very low ceilings, a flush-mount ceiling light is often the better choice.
