On our designs the shade wraps around the bulb and the light escapes through the gaps in the weave. The result is a diffused glow with a pattern that falls across walls and ceilings. What is the best rattan pendant light for a kitchen?

For a kitchen, choose a two-outlet or three-outlet rattan pendant in a dark or neutral finish, and hang it over a counter, island or breakfast table rather than directly above the hob. Black and cream globes hide splashes and fingerprints better than lighter colours, and an open weave lets the light pass through to work surfaces below.

The two-outlet black globe suits a standard island. A longer island suits the three-shade cream pendant better, as the lights spread along the surface. If you want a single feature light over a small table, the woven cage pendant works well.

What is the best rattan pendant light for a living or dining room?

For a dining room, pick a multi-outlet rattan pendant sized to the table, so the lights span about two thirds of its length. For a living room, a single large shade or a three-light cluster works well in a corner or above a reading chair. Cream and natural tones suit most colour schemes, while blue or yellow adds a deliberate accent.

Allow roughly 75 to 80 cm between the table top and the bottom of the shade, and adjust from there for your ceiling height. The 95 cm cable on our pendants gives you room to adjust before you trim.

Can I use a rattan pendant light in a bedroom or hallway?

Yes. In a bedroom, a single globe over the bed or in the centre of the ceiling gives a soft, restful light that is easier on the eyes than a bare bulb. In a hallway, a multi-outlet design lights a longer space from one ceiling point.

How do I choose a rattan pendant light? A buying guide

Choose a rattan pendant light by checking five things: the size of the shade, the number of outlets, the ceiling rose, the colour and the bulb type. Getting these right means the light looks balanced, fits your ceiling point and gives you the brightness you need.

1. Size and drop

Most of our woven globes measure around 20 cm across. That is large enough to read as a feature but small enough to use in pairs and clusters. Measure the table or island first. Then decide whether you want one dominant light or several smaller ones.

2. Number of outlets

Our collection includes 1-way, 2-way, 3-way and 4-way designs. Each outlet is a separate E27 holder hanging from a shared ceiling rose. A multi-outlet design needs only one wiring point, which keeps installation simple.

3. Ceiling rose shape

Ten of the 13 designs use a round ceiling rose, and one uses a rectangular plate. Check that the plate suits your ceiling and covers any marks left by an old fitting. Our ceiling roses collection has extras if you need a different style.

4. Colour

Cream and natural tones are the safest choice. Black gives a graphic, modern look. Blue, red and yellow work best when the rest of the room is neutral and you want one deliberate accent.

5. Bulb

Because every design takes an E27 bulb, you choose the brightness and colour temperature. Warm white around 2700K brings out the warmth of the weave. See the next section for details.

What is an E27 bulb, and which one suits a rattan pendant?

An E27 bulb has a 27 mm Edison screw base, which is the large screw fitting found in many pendant lights across Europe. All of our rattan pendants use E27 holders, so any bulb with that base will fit. Choose an LED version for lower running costs and less heat inside the shade.

Warm white bulbs (around 2700K) give the cosiest result through a woven shade. Globe, ST64 and filament-style bulbs all suit the open weave, because the bulb itself becomes part of the look. Most designs ship without bulbs, and the chandelier and two-head pendant let you choose whether to add them.

How do rattan pendant lights compare with hemp rope, fabric and glass shades?

Rattan gives the most open and patterned light of the common natural materials. Hemp rope is chunkier and more rustic, fabric shades give a smoother glow, and glass is brighter and easier to wipe clean. Which is best depends on the look you want and how much cleaning the room needs.

Rattan versus hemp rope. Both are natural and textured. Rattan is lighter and more delicate, with a visible weave pattern, while hemp rope looks heavier and more nautical. How do I install a rattan pendant light, and what if it does not work?

Switch off the power at the consumer unit, hang the pendant from the ceiling rose, and connect the cable as shown in the installation guide. If you are not confident with household wiring, use a qualified electrician. Fixed wiring is regulated in the UK, so safe installation matters more than saving time.

If the light does not turn on, check these basics first:

• The bulb is fully seated in the E27 holder and is not blown.
• The bulb is the right type, and a dimmable bulb is paired with a compatible dimmer.

If it still fails, switch off the power and ask a qualified electrician to check the connections. Do not open or modify the wiring yourself.

How do I care for a rattan lampshade?

Dust a rattan shade regularly with a soft brush or dry cloth, and keep it away from damp, steam and direct flame. Natural fibre can dry out and fray if it is exposed to heat or moisture, so we recommend dry indoor rooms and LED bulbs rather than hot incandescent ones.

Colour in photos can differ slightly from the real product, because screens are not all calibrated the same way, and hand-woven shades vary a little from piece to piece. That variation is part of the charm of natural materials.
