How do you choose a pendant light? Size, height and bulb
Work out three things: how wide the shade should be, how low it should hang, and which bulb it takes. As a general rule of thumb, hang a pendant about 75 to 90cm above a table or worktop, and make the light about a third of the table's width. Most vintage-style pendants take an E27 bulb.

- Drop height: adjustable cords (like the 100cm cord on the balloon cage or the 2m cables on the spider light) let you fine-tune it once the fitting is up.

What is an E27 bulb and which bulb do I need?
An E27 bulb is the large Edison screw fitting, 27mm across, used in most vintage and industrial pendant lights. B22 is the bayonet fitting (push and twist) common in older UK lamps. Check your holder first, then buy a matching bulb: our E27 bulbs and B22 bulbs are sorted by base.
If you want to dim the light, buy a bulb marked dimmable and use it with a compatible dimmer. Our dimmable LED bulbs start from about £3 each, for example the ST64 E27 4W dimmable filament bulb. A warm white (around 2700K) bulb suits homes and cafés best.

Why is my pendant light not working or flickering?
Most pendant faults come down to the bulb, the holder connection or a mismatch with the dimmer. Switch off at the consumer unit first, then check the bulb is seated and working, and that any dimmer supports LED. If the fault continues, ask a qualified electrician to inspect the wiring.
- Light not coming on: try a known good bulb, check the bulb is fully screwed in, and make sure the supply is on.
- Flickering on a dimmer: use a dimmable LED bulb and a dimmer rated for LED loads.
- Buzzing or humming: usually a bulb and dimmer mismatch. Try a different dimmable bulb.
