What is conduit used for in lighting?

Conduit is metal tubing originally designed to route and protect electrical wiring. In modern interior design, it is also used decoratively, with cables running through or styled to appear as if they run through exposed pipe, making the conduit itself part of the lighting design.

Can I install conduit lighting myself, or do I need an electrician?

It depends on the installation. Replacing a like-for-like light fitting in the same location can often be completed by a competent DIYer. However, new circuits or wiring extensions must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with UK Part P Building Regulations. Plug-in conduit lights can be installed without professional wiring because they connect directly to a standard UK socket.

What size is standard conduit pipe/thread — 16mm or 20mm?

20mm is the most common standard size for conduit lighting systems in the UK. It uses compatible female-thread pipes and 20mm male-thread components to create a secure connection. Some systems also use 16mm pipe with suitable reducers and adapters.

Is conduit lighting safe for bathrooms or outdoor use?

Standard conduit lighting fittings are not automatically suitable for bathrooms or outdoor environments. For wet areas, choose fittings with the correct IP rating, such as IP44 or higher. Higher-rated fittings like IP65 provide better protection against dust and water jets for outdoor or damp locations.

Does conduit lighting meet UK safety standards?

Yes. Conduit lighting products sold by LEDSone meet relevant UK and EU safety requirements and may include CE or UKCA marking. Always switch off power at the consumer unit before installation, and ensure new circuits are completed by a qualified Part P electrician.

What parts do I need to build a conduit light from scratch?

A typical conduit lighting setup requires the light fitting, ceiling rose or back plate, compatible lamp holder, wire connectors, conduit components, and a suitable LED bulb.

Can conduit pipe be painted?

Yes, conduit pipe can be painted, but proper preparation is essential. Clean and prime the surface before painting, as galvanised steel can prevent paint from bonding correctly and may cause peeling over time.
